Lot Details

'Edal Maquette', bronze, edition 11/50, signed, entitled, c.1984. 200 x 110 x 160. Provenance: Acquired direct from the sculptor in 2000; thence by bequest and descent to our vendor In 1978 Broderick visited the Isle of Skye where saw his first wild otter. It was just off the Island of Ornsay, once owned by Gavin Maxwell, the Scottish naturalist and author best known for his work with otters. Skye became Broderick's second home and he held annual sculpture exhibitions on the island for 26 years. He now divides his time between studios on Skye and Waresley near Cambridge, England. Broderick is joint president of the International Otter Survival Fund, a charity dedicated to the conservation, protection and care of otters in the UK and around the world. The well known book/film 'Ring of Bright Water' by Maxwell bought his pet/wild otter Mijbil to fame; Edal was a female replacement for Mij after his death. She lived 10 years with Maxwell at Sandaig, but died when the house was destroyed by fire. The artist has advised our vendor that a similar work would now cost approximately £4000.
