with many images by Josiah Martin, mainly larger vintage black and white photographs within a vintage album, each inscribed by hand in black ink beneath the image including 'Tangi-Over the Dead, Rotoiti' 'Deserted by all his Like - Left Alone to Die', 'Mohi-Heroic Chief', 'Maori Village - Maketu Pah', 'Rangitatoa. Tohunga - Performing Incantations - Opening of Carved House', 'Mat Weaving', 'Interior of Carved House - Whakarewarewa' etc., also including photographic prints of engravings and paintings etc. The larger images 147 x 203. The interior front cover printed with original owner's name S.F. Carter, Parnell, 1905'. Album size 252 x 295. Note: Josiah Martin (b.London 1843-1916) came to N.Z. and established the forerunner of a College of Education in Auckland in the 1870s. For health reasons he gave this up and turned to photography in partnership with William Partington who, it is thought, was responsible for a number of Maori portraits taken in the 1880s. Martin is recorded as one of the most important N.Z. photographers. $1800
