An Inuit serpentine carving
of a hunter in a kayak with seal bodies on the deck, with bone paddle, harpoon, gaff and leather thongs. Provenance: Gifted to a doctor practicing 1954-58 at the Mountain Sanatorium, an isolation hospital for TB at Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Inuit patients resident for treatment periods of months used serpentine gathered from a lake and creeks within the grounds for these carvings which were gifted to staff. Length 300.

Sir Walter Lawry Buller (1838-1906) 'A History of the Birds of New Zealand'
London 1873. iii-xxiii, 384p, [5]p of reviews and notices concerning a proposed issue of Supplement, absent title and frontis, illus., 35 hand coloured plates by J. G. Keulemans. Royal quarto 31.5cms, [page size], publisher's blue cloth with gilt illus (takahe); gilt titled spine and some pages loose. In accompanying Solander case. $2500 'The first edition of Buller's Birds of New Zealand was published in 1872-3 in an edition of 500 copies with only 35 hand coloured lithographic plates by J.G. Keulemans. The lithographic stones were then destroyed. The highly valuable first edition plates were hand coloured by Dr. R. Bowdler Sharpe's three daughters, Misses Dora Louise, Daisy Madeliner, and Sylvia Rosamund, with some copied from G. Edwards. Keuleman's background details were also coloured. Sometimes no water colour original exists where Keulemans drew his design directly on the stone and then coloured the first print himself as a guide to the hand colourers of further copies' (, online resource).

A rare presentation signed portrait photograph of explorer Roald Amundsen by Herman John Schmidt. Signed in ink and dated 30th April 1912
exactly three months after departing Antarctica and one month after informing the world of the successful first expedition to reach the geographic South Pole. Amundsen had travelled to Hobart from the Great Ice Barrier arriving on 7th March and then travelled subsequently via New Zealand to Buenos Aires to rejoin his ship The Fram. This uncommon studio portrait was taken by Schmidt owner of the Hemus Photographic Studio, Auckland. 195 x 145 image, entitled in matted window 'Capt. Roald Amundsen, Discoverer of the South Pole, December 1911', oak framed.
