Lot Details

of baluster form, embossed and engraved with three tigers in a bush setting. The foot ring engraved 'Mrs Wyndowe - A Present From The Deccan Ranger'. Stamped maker's mark to the base 'W.D'. 559gms. Provenance. Mouton family with connections to the Wyndowe family. See other lots in this auction. Captain Sam Wyndowe, (b.1830) became surgeon-major in 1873 and brigade-surgeon, when that rank was first instituted in 1879, retiring with an honorary step on June 15th, 1881. The year after he went to India he was appointed to a cavalry regiment of the Nagpur Irregular Force; in 1860 he was posted to civil employment in the Central Provinces, and soon after was appointed professor of chemistry in the Madras Medical College, and chemical examiner to the Government of Madras. In August 1867, he was given the residency surgency of Haidarabad and held that post till his retirement. He served in the Indian Mutiny from 1857 to 1859, took part in the engagement at Sambulpur, and received the Mutiny medal. Sam were married Emmie Kilvert in 1865 and had five children: Three of which were born in India.
