Lot Details

watercolour and ink, named and entitled verso 'Ships Berth (?) Auckland New Zealand March 29th 1862'. 220 x 440mm. Note: Although there are many elements in this work that compare to views of Auckland Harbour from this period, we can not confirm that this is Auckland Harbour. Note: It is recorded that in late March, 1862, the arrival of a regiment of British soldiers to Auckland marked a significant reinforcement of British forces in the colony following an attack on Kororareka. This increase in military presence was a direct result of the escalating tensions and conflict with Māori groups known as the New Zealand Wars. Additionally, the period saw the arrival of various ships carrying settlers to New Zealand, with Auckland serving as the primary port of arrival for these vessels.
