instituted in 1847 to recognize the services of those who fought in the Peninsula under Wellington, more than 30 years after the last engagement it commemorates. Recipients had to apply for the medal and medals were not awarded to those who had died since the end of the campaign. Often an applicant’s claim for a particular clasp could be declined or struck out. The story is told of an officer who said that he ‘had to consult the records, having been in so many engagements at such a great distance in time’. The medal features 6 full size, hand-engraved bars matched with a miniature size medal, an uncommon feature but known to exist.
