with unofficial slip-on silver ‘ORAKAU’ bar. Note: James Adam Capper (1841-1930) was born in Inverness shire, Scotland and served in the Navy, joining at the age of 15 years old. First coming to New Zealand in 1856, he returned here in 1863 and joined the 1st Waikato Militia, deserting from the Navy. He fought at Orakau (1864) and also at Tītī Hill (or Bald Hill) near Mauku on 23 October 1863. It was claimed at the time of his death that he was the last survivor the latter engagement. Capper lived in Lyall Bay, Wellington and was latterly employed as a messenger to the House of Representatives. A photo exists of him and four of his NZ Wars comrades taken during the visit of the US Fleet in 1925, wearing an NZ Wars medal. Vendor states that this medal was acquired with the NZ Wars medal listed separately in this auction.
