Lot Details

'feldspar porcelain' glaze, the front of the bulbous body entitled 'Wool' to the wool bale cartouche, black and white face sheep to the sides within extensive English rural landscapes. The branch form handle mounted to the shoulder with hops and barley sheaths in relief. Elaborate gilt enrichments. All in the Rococo revival style. H.480mm. Some extensive damage and staple repairs. Note: The term 'feldspar porcelain' refers to the lead-free glaze for which John Rose & Co. won a Society of Arts Gold Medal on 30 May 1820. Provenance: Inherited by New Zealand descendants of an English family, who for many years were wool staplers (wool dealers) in Worcestershire, England. One of an original pair, the other now in Australia, apparently still in the family. A similar jug held in the collection of The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge University, England. see https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/image/media-201744
