Lot Details
enamelled to the centre with the Lamb of God and the terminals with 'Dux, Lux, Rex, Lex' (my Savior (Healer), my Leader, my Light, my King, and my Law) with kowhaiwhai relief designs, stamped “F.Gurnsey”, “Stg Silver”. H.100mm including the flared three way bail. The chain on uniform links. L.680mm. Note: Born in Newport, Wales and emigrating to New Zealand from the United Kingdom in 1904, Gurnsey was considered to be amongst one of Britain’s most accomplished carvers, working in stone and wood. For 16 years Gurnsey taught at the Christchurch School of Arts and was its acting director during the first year of the First World War. Examples of his ecclesiastical work are to be found throughout the Canterbury region and also within Christchurch Cathedral and on the Bridge of Remembrance. Although he seems to have worked primarily in stone and wood, in common with many accomplished artisans of his age, he was also capable of producing work in silver and gold. Much of this work appears to have served an ecclesiastical purpose with chalices and communion cups known, however very few examples have survived.
