watercolour, c.1935. 440 x 330 ea. Note: Avinoff was from a wealthy Russian family with ties to nobility, he served a diplomatic role in the Tsar's court, he left Russia after the Revolution. He became the Director of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in 1926 and remained director until 1946. He established himself as one of the world's greatest butterfly collectors. Also well known for his paintings.
