as sold through Liberty of London. The two tiers and scrolling legs carved with radiating florals. Each tier numbered 126 in ink. 430 x 430 x 755mm. Note: The Gilbert & Sullivan Mikado opera of 1885 and the popularity of all things Japanese (known as Japanomania or Japanisme), gripped London during the late 1880's. Liberty of London (opened 1875) acted swiftly capitalising on the fundamental reshape of British fashion, theatre and interior design. It is noted that these tables were made by Japanese fisherman during their off season. They were numbered and dismantled for ease of transportation and assembled at the 'Eastern Bazaar' in Liberty's Regent Street headquarters.
