red and black chalk, heightened with white on buff paper. 250 x 180mm. Original Italian gallery label verso. Provenance: Purchased by our vendor in Italy 1965. The label also detailed 'From the collection of Giuseppe Vallardi’. Note: Vallardi (1784-1863) was a noted dealer and collector of paintings and drawings in Milan; originally working with his brother Pietro as Fratelli Vallardi (qv). He ran the business alone after Pietro's death in 1819 becoming a dealer and collector of old master drawings, including selling (e.g.) the Pisanello album to Louvre in 1856.
