Lot Details

fibreglass, steel and plywood sculpture. Signed under base. H.1970mm and 700mm. Purchased from 'Sculpture In The Gardens Auckland Botanic Gardens' 11 November - 25 February 2018 for $16,000. The associated catalogue describes this works as: 'A full sized figure of a man in a suit stands at the top of a series of steps surveying the trees around him. Above him, a short distance away, a mirror image of himself, only one-third the size, sits in a tree staring back. Survey conveys a sense of reflection and responsibility for the environment; almost like viewing oneself at a distance looking at the past and into the future. Reminiscent of classical Roman sculpture, Bryn Jones' work is incredibly lifelike, in both scale and in rich detail. His sculptures are pensive, suggesting a sense of responsibility, and evocative of stately or philosophical figures. This notion of guardianship or accountability relates back to New Zealand in themes of environmentalism and ownership of land'. Jones is an artist whose work can be found across public sites in his home of Dunedin and further afield. He studied at Otago Polytechnic School of Art, where he received an Honours Degree in Fine Art, and he has been practising as an artist since 1990. Jones is also Head of Department, Visual Arts at John McGlashan College in Dunedin. Note: Bryn Jones has been a practicing sculptor since 1990. He has an honours degree in fine art from the Otago Polytechnic School of Art. He also has a diploma in secondary teaching and is HOD Visual Arts at John McGlashan College, an integrated boy's school in Dunedin New Zealand. His work is held in private and public collections throughout New Zealand and Asia. ‘Reminiscent of classical Roman sculpture, Bryn Jones’ work is incredibly life-like, in both scale and in rich detail. His sculptures are pensive, suggesting a sense of responsibility, and evocative of stately or philosophical figures. This notion of guardianship or accountability relates back to New Zealand in themes of environmentalism and ownership of land."
