A. Lois White (1903-84)
Lot Details
preparatory pencil drawing, circa 1936, for the watercolour 'Music (c.1936)' and the oil painting 'Decorative Panel (c.1938)'. Signed lower left. 305 x 240mm visible. The watercolour 'Music' was sold by the artist's dealer, Peter McLeavey around 1984, to the notable jurist Sir Ivor Richardson and subsequently auctioned with other works by White from his collection in 2006. The composition of 'Music' is near identical to 'Decorative Panel', the latter illustrated in 'By the Waters of Babylon: The Art of Lois White', the monograph published to support the 1994 exhibition of the same title. The watercolour follows closely this preparatory sketch in all aspects, whereas in the corresponding oil painting the handling is deliberately less detailed in breadth of palette and physical features. Reference: Nicola Green 'By the Waters of Babylon: The Art of A Lois White', David Bateman 1993, pp. 42 and 51. Provenance: Dame Marilyn Waring DNZM, MP (Raglan/Waipa 1975-84). Purchased: Cambridge, Waikato antique shop, circa 1980s.
