Portrait of a Woman with Lace Head Scarf, oil on canvas, signed right edge. 740 x 620mm. A renowned painter of the 19th century, who exhibited Royal Academy between 1814 and 1866, Carpenter was one of the most successful of artists, and of woman artists of her era, a specialist portraitist with a practice in London from the age of twenty. Her cultural circle included Richard Parkes Bonington and John Constable. Her works are held by the National Portrait Gallery and the Tate Gallery, London amongst many other institutions. Te Papa, Wellington holds a portrait by her of her mother-in-law. Some small repairs to the canvas. Birdseye maple framed.
