A very good obsidian bladed spear, Bismarck Archipelago, Admiralty Islands, PNG. Late 19thC. Fine large flaked point fixed with parinarium nut paste and bound with fine cord mount with tri-colour ochre decoration and similar shoulder additionally with coix seeds, fitted to a slender tapering shaft. L.1610mm. Provenance: Mann Family Collection, Leipzig, Germany; Zemanek-Munster Wurzburg Auctions Sept 17, 2011; Tribal Art Kortmann 2012. The Jorgen Lotz Collection.

Note: The Admiralty Islands, part of the Bismarck Archipelago, were administered as a German colony, known as German New Guinea, between 1884 and 1914. The spear probably made its way to the German Mann Family Collection from this period.
