Lot Details

gouache on paper, signed and dated 1925. 735 x 1070mm. Note: Blythe Fletcher was born in Yorkshire in 1890. He arrived in New Zealand in 1909 before finally settling in Christchurch. Fletcher worked mainly in watercolour and gouache and exhibited regularly with the Academy of Fine Arts in Wellington and the C.S.A. The Approaching Storm is a rare, large scale work probably conceived for a public exhibition. The mood of the painting is foreboding; the dark clouds and tempestuous sky suggest a storm on the horizon. This is heightened by the position of the horses and chickens, taking shelter behind the hayricks.
