Lot Details
an arched back manaia prow figure to each end, impressed woven type pattern cast to the hull, copper wire woven to the top edge. Lost wax, kiln cast copper blue 40% Gaffer lead crystal glass. Engraved signature and dated 2003 to the base. L.555mm. Note: Firman's work has been influenced by NZ, Celtic and Pacific culture and imaging. Canoes, tattooed palm forms, Pacific pods etc. Firman has lived on a yacht, sailed the pacific, and researched the seafaring culture of the South Pacific. Her works reflect the histories of distant cultures, united by their relationship with the ocean. They convey the idea of migration, narrative, and transportation of cultural beliefs and traditions. Her sculptures allude to the importance of the sea in the practical and spiritual life of these cultures.
