16-inch radius ebony arm and limb octant; unknown maker; c.1800; ivory plaque on the crossbar; ivory scale divided -5 to 95; brass index arm engraved with boats and flowering tendrils; ivory vernier scale 0 at the centre; thumbscrew lock absent; vanes and shades absent; capped pencil absent. Object and horizon glasses absent; adjustment of the horizon glasses by levers; wing nuts and milled clamping screws. Support struts absent. Provenance: The H.N.E Sheppard Estate Collection. Purchased for $1800 at Webbs Auctions 26th April 1990.
