Lot Details

FRENCH SQUARE RIGGED SHIP & MAORI CANOE OFFSHORE, UNSIGNED 400 x 555mm, in England in 1831 and was educated at Northgate Chichester Boarding School, IN 1844 he was apprenticed to the seal and joined the ship ‘London’ but in 1846 was transferred to the ‘Statesman’ on which he served until 1850. In 1850 he became Second Officer on the ‘Simla’ and after serving on other vessels became master of the ‘Kent’ in 1856. In 1861 he arrived in New Zealand and joined the New Zealand Insurance Company as Marine Surveyor. He was a keen self-taught artist and is known for his paintings of ships. His works are represented in several public collections.
