Lot Details

with black lacquer wood and brass accents from the late Edo to the early Meiji period. This late 19th century Hokai shell box was made in Japan with black lacquered wood and brass. This cylindric box shows an unusual Silhouette carved like stacked rings. The box is raised on four lacquer legs. The upper section features a cylindric lid. The box is adorned with beautifully etched brass accents, particularly on the legs. Loop holes on the legs allow for the top lid to be tied down to aid in transporting. Hokai boxes were used to store shells which served as pieces for the Kaiwase game during the holiday season. With its unusual shape, with plaited green cord binding.
