Lot Details

the rectangular case with hinged lid fitted with a hand painted enamel compass with blued steel hand, gold metal framed, gold stringing, some loss and one piece loose, gold hinge and push button. The interior lid with original mirror, the base with two red silk lined double tray, one holding a toothpick, the other a 2⅜"mercury Fahrenheit/Réaumur scale thermometer (cracked) marked verso: 'Bancks 441 Strand London'. Robert Bancks (1796-1831) mathematical and optical instrument maker and optician, instrument maker to the Prince of Wales, George IV, traded at 440 Strand 1795-1804 and 441 Strand 1805-30.
