marked 'Crichton' on ivory plaque on the crossbar (right piece replaced); with ivory scale divided -3º to 108º; brass index arm; ivory vernier scale divided 0º-20º (chipped); brass thumbscrew lock to back and screw adjuster to front; replaced sighting vane, brass mirror; four shades and three horizon shades; horizon glass adjustment by lever and adjuster screw, some legs and screws replaced. c.1840. John Crichton is listed as trading between 1831 and 1865 primarily from 112 Leadenhall Street, London where he advertised himself as instrument maker to the Honourable East India Company and to Trinity House. He exhibited and was awarded at the 1851 Great Exhibition of 1851. The firm continued to trade beyond 1864 as John Crichton & Son
