Lot Details

This is a rare piece of calligraphy personally inscribed by Yi Wan Yong, the 7th Prime Minister of Korea. Yi is historically infamous for his role in signing the Eulsa Treaty and the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty of 1910, acts widely condemned as betrayals of Korean sovereignty. Despite this controversial legacy, Yi Wan Yong was also renowned for his mastery of calligraphy, a skill clearly reflected in the elegance and precision of this work. Due to the destruction of many of his pieces over time, surviving examples of Yi’s calligraphy are rare. This particular item holds added significance: it was gifted directly by Yi Wan Yong to a close friend, a businessman whose great-great-grandson is the current vendor. Two additional calligraphy works accompany this piece. While not directly authored by Yi Wan Yong, they are believed to be connected to him and were created by other respected calligraphers of the era.
