friend of the artist. Note: Despite being severely crippled by polio at an early age which required her to wear callipers and use a walking frame all her life; Phyllis Crowley took a full part in Auckland art activities. She left her mark both as an artist and as the unofficial historian of Elam where she attended from 1929-1943. Phyllis was a founding member of the Rutland Group and was regularly reviewed in Art in New Zealand: She taught metalwork and jewellery at Elam and Otahuhu High School as well as taking private pupils. In 1955 she won first prize for jewellery in a World Craft Exhibition.
