Provenance: These items from the estate of R.H. (Bob) Stott. QSM. FCILT. Words from the family….. Showing a keen interest in railways from his pre-school years Bob was aided & abetted on many train trips by his NZR Grandfather-but who also advised him not to join the railway company. A lifelong interest in railway. He started his journalistic career as a cadet reporter on Wellington’s Dominion where he was soon immersed in the active railway interests that abounded. He moved to Na, where he became NZ’s youngest high Court reporter before moving on to Whakatāne on his marriage. He then became Chief Report for the local tri-weekly Beacon. From there he became Chief Reporter for the Manawatu Standard - Complementing his already gained heavy truck licence with a private pilot licence – and was selected in 1996 to be NZ’s representative for the 5 month course in the UK as a Commonwealth Press Union Fellow. In addition to working on several newspapers he studied at Oxford University & the … set him up for his final career several years later, working for some time again at the Dom as Deputy Chief Reporter & Transport Reporter. In later years there he & The Chief Reporter Robin Bromby started Rails Magazine which soon became full time. After a couple of years Robin left for Australia and Bob continued virtually writing all the content for 32 years. It’s not everyone who gets the chance to make their hobby their job – hard work for little recompense but what fun!
