ca. 1780-1830), Note: Peter Paillou the Younger lived until 1834 and produced much of his best work in the nineteenth century. Prior to this, however, he had famously been commissioned to paint a miniature of Charles Darwin’s mother (Suzannah Wedgwood) who died when Darwin was very young. It was the only likeness of his mother that Darwin would ever see, and when he was reassured of its accuracy of representation, he found it almost unbearably poignant. It is believed to be in the collection of the Cambridge Fitzwilliam Museum.
