Lot Details

acrylic & graphite on board, untitled (A Shocking Experience), 205 x 205mm Gizmo is John's longest held possession, a Teddy bear that predates the artist himself. He is also the most important and commonly recurring of Sturgess's characters - Gizmo emobodies chaos, a smoking, drinking, swearing agent of mayhem. Here, he appears urinating on an electric fence - previously the painting read 'The End' across Gizmo's pants, but this has been overpainted - so canonically Gizmo could endure.
