Lot Description

An early 16th/17thC period oak carved boss or post capital, compact squat circular shape carved with a snake biting the wing of a griffin that is devouring an eagle. Dia.120mm, H.55mm. Scratch inscribed underneath Haughtan (Tower?) 1781, possibly a reference to Hoghton Tower, Lancashire. Weighted with lead as a paperweight.
