the subscription copy belonging to Colonel Robert Henry Wynyard. The publication was originally issued in ten parts in paper wrappers and appears to have been subsequently bound after some repairs to the previously loose pages. Three plates are absent and there are tears and further damage throughout. Published: London, Thomas M'Lean, 1847. Imperial folio size. Comprising: hand-coloured lithographed pictorial title page; letterpress title page; lithographed dedication; Subscribers; Preface; 'General Remarks ...' plus 57 (of 60) hand-coloured lithographs, each with a tissue-guard and accompanying descriptive letterpress. Bound in 19thC red full morocco binding, the spine in six compartments with raised bands and gilt lettering. Provenance: Colonel (afterwards Maj-Gen) R. H. Wynyard [Commander of the forces in the advance on Ruapekapeka Pah concluding the war of the north in January 1864. Lieutenant Governor of the Province of New Ulster 1851-1853. First Superintendent of the Province of Auckland 1853-1855. Commander of the Forces in New Zealand 1851-1858. Officer administrating the Government of New Zealand 1853-1855 and afterwards Lieutenant Governor and Commander of the Forces in South Africa 1859-1863]. To his son Montague Harrison Wynyard, purchased by his great-niece at his estate auction in 1996, by descent to our vendor.
