heavy salt glazed with bearded man mask. Variable glaze effects, some minor chipping consistent with age. H.185mm. Note: Bellarmine jugs, also known as Bartmann ("bearded man") jugs, are a type of decorated salt-glazed stoneware manufactured in Europe—primarily the Cologne and Frechen regions of Germany—throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. While production started in the mid-1500s, they reached peak popularity and exportation in the early-to-mid 17thC, with some production continuing into the 18thC
