watercolour, signed and titled lower left, inscribed illegibly and dated 1886 in pencil in another hand lower left. 240 x 475mm. Note: John Hugh (Hugh) Boscawen arrived in New Zealand in 1876 after serving in the British navy. He was aide-de-camp to Lord Ranfurley (Governor General of New Zealand) and was a watercolourist and photographer of Māori subjects. He also worked in the Auckland office of Lands and Survey. On 10th June 1886, Mt Tarawera erupted and many villages and homes around Lake Rotomahana and Tarawera were lost. As a result, many survivors relocated to Whakarewarewa which grew and became a tourist attraction.
