The following nautical section includes items from the H.N.E. Sheppard Estate Collection. It is the culmination of over 40 years of collecting from around the world. The late Harvey Sheppard MNZM, an Auckland accountant by profession, adored the sea and everything associated with it. Over the years, he built with his father a speedboat, aptly named "Overdraft”; the purchase of a Vindex launch followed; and finally a lovely Pacific 38 yacht, in which the family had many memorable holidays. As well as his passion for collecting, he was well known in boating circles, and a generous supporter of many marine causes, including Water Safety NZ, Half Moon Bay Marina, the Motutapu Island Outdoor Education Camp, and was instrumental in the formation of the Royal NZ Coast Guard in the 1970s, later teaching Navigation to hundreds of enthusiastic students. Now it is time to pass on Harvey’s remarkable nautical collection to others who also share his passion for the sea and the mysteries of navigation.
