a rare and historically important New Zealand Land Wars oil painting. A view of Major-General Sir Thomas Simpson Pratt, Lieutenant Colonel Carey and British colonial troops of the 40th Regiment of Foot being ferried ashore from HMCSS (Her Majesty's Colonial Steam Sloop) Victoria after embarking from Sydney, Australia. At the beginning of the first Taranaki war New Plymouth was besieged and under proclamation of martial law. Carey together with fifty men of the 40th Regiment, arrived in August 1860 to reinforce the local garrison. Other vessels depicted include the paddle steamer Tasmanian Maid, the Airedale and the George Henderson. Provenance: Private Collection, Taranaki. With International Art Centre, 2012.
