'Angel with a dark heart', oil on board, initialled and dated '89, titled verso. Original rimu frame with colour wash. Provenance: Private Collection, Wellington; with Cordy's 2006; Private Collection. 'After the unsettled years of living in Wellington, Puponga and Christchurch with occasional visits back to his land and caravan on the western foothills of Mt. Taranaki, Smither returned to his mountain studio in 1988. "From looking so intensely at the sky, I came up with the simple idea of clouds holding the archetypal blueprint for everything. Anything I wanted to see, I saw in the clouds themselves. If you see the planet as a living thing, according to the Gaia principal, then the clouds are the brain that circles the planet".'
