1903. The coffee pot with ivory handle, high domed hinged lid and set with two cabochons, the sugar bowl and tray each with four cabochons. The pot and bowl Birmingham 1903, the tray Birmingham 1905. Each with 'Cymric' and 'L&C' makers marks. The tray also stamped 5103. The pot H.205mm. The bowl Dia.95mm. The tray L.342mm. Total weight 1224gm. Some dents. A Japanese Meiji period vase modelled as an ikebana basket
of square section baluster shape with basket weave ground, with high relief cast and chiseled decoration to the faces including a cicada and nymph on a pea pod and tendril. Other sides include flowers, insects, a spider and a snail. Slender bamboo sections form the feet, the two handles, and frame the body margins. Cast three-character signature under the base. H.325mm.

A Japanese early katana blade in mixed fittings including WW2 cloth and ray skin bound hilt
reshaped at the tip, engraved characters to the tang. Provenance: bought back to NZ by Naval Lieutenant H Prins (Dental) who was serving on HMNZS Achilles at war's end after the Japanese surrender. With original linen (surrender?) tag, and translation attributing the blade to Sadamasa c.1410.
