Provenance: the collection of the late Max McLellan, artist, Auckland Grammar schoolmate and Elam classmate. 100 x 95 x 300mm. Losses. City Art Gallery Wellington. ‘From the start his figures are athletic little people, even before the 'Athletes' series that begins in 1962. First, though he is interested in making them stand up…The figures are rudimentary, archaic, secondary to the formal problem of weight, balance, support, mass and silhouette. But static. ‘There are several pieces made of several figures standing or sitting in a kind of framework, on stage, in a situation, 'Miners in a Cage' (terrific early pun), 'Welders', 'People on a Bus', fixed figures in metal without a proscenium, a step or two away from puppet theatre…’
