'Remarkable Rata Tree (Metrosideros Robusta) near Byrnes, Lower Hutt, Oct 1847', pencil and ink sketch, titled, signed and dated 1847-8 lower left, inscribed indistinctly lower right 'Rata near Byrnes'. 150 X 180mm. Provenance: Dudley Saint (b.1924) (British Colonial Service (Fiji) 1946-1970, Asst. Police Supt and A.d.C to Governor Sir Ronald Garvey 1952-58). Notes: Swainson emigrated to NZ in 1841, purchasing 1,100 acres in the Hutt Valley from the New Zealand Company. The Hon. John Bryce (1833-1913) arrived NZ 1840, built the first wooden house in Wellington, later Minister for Native Affairs responsible for actions related to Parihaka. Verso: typescript excerpt from S.C.
