Lot Details

'Dandelion' (蒲公英), woodcut numbered 47/80, signed, inscribed and dated 1959. 570 x 370mm. With accompanying original artist's and artists' association cards (2) and original typescript/manuscript exhibition label noting the work as 'gold medal winner of World Graphic Art Competition in Laibisi' (Láibǐxī/Leipzig). Wu Fan was born in Chongqing, Sichuan in 1923, he was admitted to the National Arts Department's Picture Department in 1944. After the Sino-Japanese War he moved to Hangzhou with the school and transferred to the Western Painting Department. In 1956 he was elected as the vice chair of the Sichuan Artists Association and soon after began experimenting with Chinese water-based ink and pigments (shuiyin) rather than with the more commonly used European-style oil-based printing ink. By carefully varying the tones of diluted ink applied to the block the inadvertent result of the technique makes each print vary slightly. The technique and his lyrical handling of subjects came to define his personal style. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlDy1g6LMvQ technique video [note minute 3:18 - 3:25])
