Manufactured by the New Zealand P&T Workshops, c.1945/47. Fine Note: In 1945 the Post Office introduced Counter Rolls to speed up the issue of small quantities of postage stamps. At the Post & Telegraph's Workshops in Wellington five appliances, each with six compartments were made and sent to the Chief Post Offices at Wellington, Lower Hutt, Auckland, Dunedin and Christchurch. Later a seven compartment appliance was sent to Timaru. The Post Office decided to make eight compartment machines standard issue to the larger Post Offices. The need for counter clerks to be able to make up their individual accounts without having to unroll the coils in use was overcome by numbering the joins during manufacture of the rolls from the sheets. At first they were written in pencil, but very soon the numbers were rubber stamped. Finally a linotype press was used to print the numbers before manufacture. Roll size: 1d to 6d - 20 strips of 24 stamps 1/- & 1/3d - 20 strips of 16 stamps
