c.1860, ivory plaque to crossbar marked 'Spencer, Browning & Co, London' (1840-70), ivory scale divided -2 to 107, brass index arm, ivory vernier divided 0-20, brass thumbscrew lock and adjustment screw, two pinhole sight vane with swivel shutter, shades and horizon glass on brass table, adjustment by milled screw and lever, capped pencil and recording plaque absent. Marked at the centre of the scale (at 47º) ‘SBR'. In mahogany box with Spencer, Browning & Co. (cautionary) label affixed. Provenance: The H.N.E Sheppard Estate Collection.
