Lot Details

The Union Steamship Company's 'S.S. Rotomahana', watercolour, entitled c1880, 390 x 620mm. Note: This famous steamer was a legend in her own time with her clipper bow and huge raked funnel. She was 108 metres long and displaced 1777 tons and was the first ocean-going steamer in the world to be built of mild steel and fitted with bilge keels. She was essentially a passenger and mail steamer but was replaced in 1907 by the Maori because she was too expensive to run. Provenance: The National Maritime Museum on loan from the Charlebois Collection.
