watercolour, signed & dated 24/9/92. 565 x 375mm (sheet) n.b. works from this series were completed by Turrner as the Artist in Residence at the Tylee Cottage in Whanganui (as offered by the Sarjeant Gallery) during August through December 1992. Whanganui-born, Turner was a contributor to the modernist movement in New Zealand influenced by fellow artists Theo Schoon and Gordon Walters. He was a conscientious objector during World War II and remains the only New Zealand artist to have ever been arrested and convicted for painting on a Sunday. Turner sailed for England in 1963, working there as a commercial artist. He returned to New Zealand to complete the Tylee Cottage residency.
