Lot Details
(re)polished blade with double slender fullers for around 1/3 of the blade. Blade 455mm, tang 140mm with single meguki, unsigned. Iron tsuba with radiating fluting and open C-scrolls to the sides, remnant gilt inlay. Leather ribbon bound ray skin tsuka, menuki of dragons, fuchi-kashira of serpentine dragons, kodzuka hilt with mixed metal crayfish. Black saya with kojiri decorated with gilt square scroll design. Notes: Ken Corneal's catalogue notes the blade in Nagamaki Naoshi zukuri style. Unsigned, but with 1996 Nihon Token Kyokai Hozon (NTHK) papers stating the sword was made by Naoe Sukemoto of the Hitachi Province, son of Sukemasa, a student of Masahide. Working period 1810–1854 and rated in Fujishiro’s book as Chujosaku (middle upper quality). Blade was repolished in Japan 1996. Old refinishing to saya.
