Lot Details
Including: Richard Hadlee, Malcolm Marshall, Mike Gatting, Allan Border, Courtney Walsh, Gordon Greenadge, Desmond Haynes, Abdul Qadir, Dilip Vengsarkar, Clive Rice, Roger Harper, This was a five-day first-class exhibition match held at Lord's from 20–25 August 1987 celebrating the club's 200th anniversary. It pitted an MCC team captained by Mike Gatting against a Rest of the World XI captained by Allan Border. The match ended in a draw. Twenty-two of the world's greatest players gathered for the occasion, described as a genuine coming-together of cricket's biggest stars of the era — with England holding the Ashes and West Indies dominating the world game, only one Australian (Border himself) was deemed worthy of a place in the Rest of the World side. Graham Gooch and Mike Gatting dominated MCC's batting effort with Gooch scoring 179. Sunil Gavaskar, playing what he announced would be his final first-class match, finally scored a century at Lord's (188) — a milestone that had eluded him throughout his career The Wisden-style account notes it turned into ‘a glorious festival of batting’ rather than a tense contest — despite Test match playing conditions over five days, the sheer depth of batting talent on both sides meant the bowlers had a tough time of it, and centuries flowed freely (four players in total reached three figures across the match). The MCC side included: Mike Gatting (capt), Graham Gooch, Gordon Greenidge, David Gower, Malcolm Marshall, Richard Hadlee, Clive Rice — a mix of England legends plus West Indies and New Zealand greats playing for the ‘home’ side. The Rest of the World included: Allan Border (capt), Sunil Gavaskar (his farewell first-class match), Imran Khan, Ravi Shastri, Courtney Walsh, Jeffrey Dujon, Roger Harper, Dilip Vengsarkar.
