Lot Details

bat (710 mm) signed in ink and representing two different series/matches, Including: Allan Lamb, Gladstone Small, Desmond Haynes, Carl Hooper, Ian Bishop, Jeffrey Dujon One of the most chaotic and one-sided series in England's history, remembered above all for England's carousel of captains(four during the summer).West Indies toured England from 7 May to 8 August 1988, captained by Viv Richards, playing 16 first-class matches. West Indies comfortably retained the Wisden Trophy by winning the Test series 4–0, while England won the earlier three-match ODI series 3–0, retaining the Texaco Trophy. Malcolm Marshall (35 wickets) was Player of the Series for West Indies, and Graham Gooch (459 runs) for England, who ended the summer as captain. This tour also marked the beginning of the fearsome Courtney Walsh–Curtly Ambrose bowling partnership, which would go on to trouble batsmen worldwide for the next 12 years. Malcolm Marshall was the dominant bowler of the series with 35 wickets, while Alan Logie (364 runs) was West Indies' leading run-scorer. For England, Graham Gooch was easily the standout with 459 runs, a remarkable tally given the chaos and repeated batting collapses around him This bat is also signed by the Australian Aboriginal team. In May 1988, the Aboriginal players, captained by John McGuire and managed by former rugby international Mark Ella, toured England to mark the Australian Bicentenary, retracing the exact steps of the pioneering 1868 team. This was the second all-Indigenous Australian cricket team to tour England, coming 120 years after the very first one — a landmark in its own right, since that 1868 side is recognised as Australia's first-ever international sports team of any kind, predating the first official Ashes Test by over a decade. A 2002 ABC/Film Illawarra documentary, ‘A Fine Body of Gentlemen,’ later told the story of both the 1868 and (implicitly) this 1988 tour in detail. Recognition of Aboriginal cricket's pioneering role built steadily in the years afterward — the original 1868 team was inducted into the Australian Sports Hall of Fame in 2002, Cricket Australia issued them official Baggy Green cap numbers in 2004, and Australia Post released a commemorative stamp in 2018 to mark 150 years since that first tour.
