Including: David Gower, Pat Pocock, Chris Broad, Allan Lamb, Duleep Mendis, Arjuna Ranatunga, Roy Dias, Aravinda de Silva. A genuinely landmark match for Sri Lankan cricket. Sri Lanka toured England in the 1984 season to play a one-match Test series against England, from 23–28 August, captained by Duleep Mendis, and the match was drawn. This was Sri Lanka's first Test at Lord's — and although they didn't win, they gained a first-innings lead of 121 and had the better of a drawn game. Sidath Wettimuny made 190 — the highest score by anyone on Test debut in England, while captain Duleep Mendis raced to a century off just 112 balls, falling six runs short of a second hundred in the same innings. Sri Lanka declared on 491 for 7, and Wettimuny was named Player of the Match for his marathon 190 Sri Lanka's batters put England's seam attack of Botham, Jonathan Agnew, Paul Allott and Richard Ellison to the sword throughout. Legendary player Aravinda de Silva made his Test debut in this match — his very first appearance for Sri Lanka. All in all a legacy moment in Sri Lankan cricket after their just their second full year in Test cricket, and their first visit to the ‘home of cricket,’ Lord's, producing a performance strong enough to deny England victory and earn real respect.
