Lot Details

Including: Martin Crowe, Richard Hadlee, Graham Gooch, Allan Lamb, Michael Atherton, Ian Smith, Andrew Jones, John Wright The tour of England is most notable as Sir Richard Hadlee's farewell series - a three-match Test series, which England won 1-0 with two matches drawn. Hadlee retired from all forms of cricket after the tour. The touring team, led by captain John Wright and spearheaded by Hadlee, was one of considerable talent and experience, blending veterans with players selected for the future. Mike Atherton was named Player of the Series for England with 357 runs, while Hadlee took the honour for New Zealand despite scoring just 107 runs, on the strength of 16 wickets. In the first test at Trent Bridge Graham Gooch's 210 and Hadlee's nine-wicket haul headlined the contest. The second test at Lords was notable for a Hadlee milestone. Sir Richard Hadlee was knighted between the first and second Tests — the first New Zealander ever so honoured — making the Lord's Test scorecard a unique modern-day sporting document as a result, even if there was some criticism about the timing of the announcement. Trevor Franklin and John Wright set a New Zealand first-wicket record for Tests in England, putting on 185 at Lord's, with Franklin going on to his maiden Test hundred; Wright fell two runs short of his eleventh Test century — a personal disappointment on what was his final overseas tour. England won the third test at Edgbaston. Hadlee signed off in style with his 36th and final Test five-wicket haul, decimating England for 158 in their second innings. The Birmingham Test brought down the curtain on Hadlee's remarkable career - notably he took his 431st and final Test wicket with the very last ball he bowled in Test cricket
