Lot Details

Including: Martin Crowe, Stephen Fleming, Ken Rutherford, Gavin Larson, Dion Nash, Bryan Young, Geoff Howarth (coach), Danny Morrison, Shane Thomson, Blair Hartland The Black Caps toured England from 29 April to 10 July 1994, under captain Ken Rutherford, playing three Tests and two ODIs. England won the Test series 1–0 and the ODI series 1–0. Mike Atherton captained England and was also the leading run-scorer in the series with 273 runs at an average of 68.25, including two centuries. Phil DeFreitas was the leading wicket-taker with 21 and was named Player of the Series alongside New Zealand's Dion Nash. In the second test at Lords Nash had a genuinely outstanding performance becoming the first New Zealander to take 11 wickets in a Test against England, and also the first New Zealand player to take 10 or more wickets and score a half-century in the same Test at Lord's — a rare double achievement. Martin Crowe scored 115 in New Zealand's second innings at Old Trafford in the Third Test — and it turned out to be a historically significant innings. It was his 17th and final Test century — a New Zealand record at the time — and came just days after his 142 at Lord's in the Second Test, making them back-to-back hundreds. Notably, this century also stands as the last Test hundred of his career, since he managed only modest scores in his final series in India the following year before retiring. There's also a fitting postscript: the actual bat Crowe used for this innings became part of the new Crowe-Thorpe Trophy, contested between New Zealand and England — the trophy is made from wood sourced from bats belonging to Crowe and England's Graham Thorpe (both now deceased), with Crowe's family specifically donating the bat used for his Lord's century as the trophy's namesake piece.
