Lot Details
Including: Hansie Cronje, Allan Donald, Fanie de Villiers, David Richardson, Mike Atherton, Graham Hick, Joey Benjamin. This was South Africa's first tour of England since their apartheid-era ban was lifted — a historic occasion in itself. Three-Test series, drawn 1–1. 1st Test, Lord's — South Africa won by 356 runs, a dominant performance in their first-ever Test on English soil. Overshadowed by the ‘dirt in the pocket’ scandal: TV cameras caught England captain Michael Atherton rubbing dirt from his pocket onto the ball, sparking a ball-tampering controversy and calls for his resignation. 2nd Test, Headingley — Drawn. Atherton answered his critics with a defiant 99, playing through the fallout from the Lord's incident. 3rd Test, The Oval — England won by 8 wickets to level the series, built almost entirely around one of the most famous individual spells in English cricket history: Devon Malcolm's 9/57. After being struck on the helmet by a Fanie de Villiers bouncer (bowled at Kepler Wessels' instruction), an enraged Malcolm reportedly told the South Africans, ‘you guys are history’ and proceeded to demolish their second innings, taking 9 wickets for 57 runs — the sixth-best innings figures in Test history at the time.
